Take advantage of the new Apple Log on iPhone 15 Pro and transform your iPhone footage into the iconic cinematic quality of the Arri Alexa, the world’s most revered digital film camera.
We’ve shot several projects with the iPhone and always felt that the end result — even after color grading — looked a little unnatural. Apple’s standard Rec709 look was overly saturated, with aggressive curves and artificial skin tones. The iPhone footage had a “painted” look. And not in a good way.
Prior to the release of the iPhone 15 Pro, Apple’s imaging pipeline produced unpredictable results due to the use of dynamic tone mapping, which would override manual exposure and opportunistically adjust local areas of the scene algorithmically. This prevented us from implementing a truly accurate Arri LUT for the iPhone (although we did our best to match it for Filmic LogV3+).
The iPhone 15 Pro series overcomes this limitation thanks to the implementation of Apple ProRes Log, which completely bypasses the dynamic tone mapping algorithm and gives us a consistent and known gamma curve every time. However, Apple's official Apple Log LUT just turns your footage back into a bunch of unnatural-looking, oversaturated goo.
Now that all variables have been removed, we can accurately analyze the iPhone 15 Pro sensor and achieve a consistent match with the Arri Alexa.
